Frank & Marilyn’s Story – Living with ALS
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is an incredibly challenging disease. For Frank Mongiello and his loving family, the Progressa® bed system has helped to make his life more manageable. Watch his story to see how the Progressa® bed allows for a higher level of comfort and independence than Frank ever thought possible.
Frank's Story: The Hill-Rom® at Home Difference.
A dancer for most of his life, Frank has faced a tough battle slowly losing his mobility and independence from a degenerative spinal disease called Syringomyelia. After spending time on a Hill-Rom bed during in-patient rehab, Frank then came home to a very basic, standard home care bed. It didn’t meet his needs. After working with a Hill-Rom at Home representative, Frank received a VersaCare bed. This bed has made all the difference.
Andrew’s Story - Regaining a Level of Independence with the Progressa ® Bed System

I think I would know better than most— everything can change in the blink of an eye. In a few seconds twenty one years ago, I was left paralyzed from the neck down. What has followed from there has been a story about overcoming life’s greatest adversities. I’d like to tell that story now and how Hill-Rom and the Progressa bed have helped me on that journey.
From a young age, I was always interested in being a pilot. I attended military college at the Citadel, joined the United States Air Force, and spent several years as a B-52 bomber pilot flying combat missions over Vietnam. My life in the clouds, though, would end up being drastically different from how I live today…
Several years after retiring from the military, I fell from a tree in my yard and was left paralyzed from the neck down. A lot went through my head in the coming days after my injury, and quite frankly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep going at all…
But late one night lying in that hospital, I came to the realization that would govern my life from then on—I could either be miserable or happy. The choice was completely mine. I chose to be happy and to try to make the most out every moment.
The journey since certainly hasn’t been an easy one, but Hill-Rom and their products have helped tremendously. After being on poor equipment during rehab, I knew I wanted a better surface in my home to fit my needs. The Hill-Rom team put me on a Synergy® Air Elite, and for years, it kept me free of pressure injuries and allowed a high level of comfort. While the SAE was great, everything really changed when I learned of the Progressa bed.
I spoke almost daily over the phone with Jim, a Hill-Rom patient advocate. Jim went the extra mile every step of the way. He truly listened to my needs and matched the right bed with to my specific condition. And once we had decided on the Progressa, he worked vigorously on my behalf to receive full coverage through the VA. I really think the world of Jim. I know for a fact that, without him, I would never have achieved the quality of life I have now on the Progessa.
As a pilot, I inherently love to be in control and operate independently, and the Progressa has allowed me a level of independence I haven’t achieved since my accident. The control scheme on the Progessa is intuitive and allows me to actually manipulate some functions of the bed on my own when I never could before. Furthermore, given my condition, fluid builds in my feet. I have to be able to raise them in order to reduce the swelling. The Progressa’s positioning functions allow me to do this faster and easier than ever before. The automatic pressure redistribution is also crucial. My caregiver used to have to turn and reposition me manually quite frequently, but now he has to do it less as the bed shares the workload with him. I also get a better night’s sleep, because I don’t have to worry that I’ve slept too long in the wrong position. The quiet functioning of the bed also makes it easier to fall asleep.
The list of benefits goes on and on, but here’s the bottom line: Hill-Rom and the Progressa have helped me make the most of my condition like never before. Jim worked with me tirelessly, and the Progressa is a very impressive piece of technology that has truly changed my life. I couldn’t be more grateful.
